Never can a room look comfortable without books; pictures are secondary, books are still more homely and comfortable. You can live in a room with books in it from floor to ceiling and not miss pictures, especially if you have one very good one, a drawing even, or something rare and fine, – one single one; but books in profusion!
Books ought to be scattered all over the house, even in the passages, in the bedroom, les livres de chevet, everywhere.”
